A5-style vs 5-in-1 clipper blades
Detachable A5-style blades swap out for each length; a 5-in-1 blade adjusts with a lever. How the two systems differ in lengths, guard combs and cross-brand fit.

Short answer
They are two different blade systems. A detachable A5-style clipper changes length by swapping the whole blade, and Andis' detachable range runs from a #40 (about 0.25 mm) to a 3/4HT (about 19 mm).[1] A 5-in-1 clipper has one adjustable blade with set stops; the Andis ProClip 5-in-1 offers #9, #10, #15, #30 and #40.[2] Pick detachable for longer lengths without combs, and 5-in-1 if you mostly clip short or with guard combs.

What "A5" means
The name comes from Oster. Oster says its Turbo A5 clipper takes all Oster A5 detachable blades, including its Cryogen-X blades and the wider Take-Down-Quick series.[5] Other makers design clippers to accept them: Andis says its AGC2 works with its own UltraEdge, CeramicEdge and ShowEdge blades and with Oster A-5 blades.[6]
So "A5-style" describes a family of detachable blades, not a promise that every blade fits every clipper. Cross-brand fit is documented for specific clippers, such as the AGC2. We could not verify broader claims, such as every A5-style blade fitting Wahl's KM clippers, which we found only on retailer pages.
Two detachable clippers with published specs:
| Clipper | Speed | Power | Blade supplied |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oster Turbo A5 | Single speed, over 3,100 strokes per minute | AC, 45 W | #10 CryogenX[5] |
| Andis AGC2 | Two speeds, 2,700 and 3,400 strokes per minute | 120 V / 60 Hz, 14 ft cord | #10 UltraEdge[6] |
Detachable systems also give you material and width options. Andis says a ceramic cutter can be added to any UltraEdge blade, and it sells wide blades that pair with wide combs.[1] Its ceramic cutters are not compatible with its M-Force blades, so even within one brand, check each combination.[1]
What "5-in-1" means
A 5-in-1 blade is one blade assembly that adjusts between several settings. The Andis ProClip 5-in-1 has five micro-click stops (#9, #10, #15, #30 and #40) and runs at 4,500 to 6,500 strokes per minute across five speeds; Andis claims up to 2.5 hours of runtime, with USB-C charging.[2] Wahl's Motiva2, launched in April 2026, uses Wahl's adjustable 5-in-1 blade and claims up to three hours of cordless runtime, with corded use when needed.[7]
The stops carry blade numbers. If they follow the detachable chart, they are all short settings: on Andis' chart a #10 leaves about 1/16 in (1.5 mm) and a #40 about 1/100 in (0.25 mm).[1] Check your clipper's manual for the actual length at each stop. For longer coats you add guard combs, which Wahl sells as a separate set for its 5-in-1 clippers.[3]
Which suits you?
| If you want to... | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| Leave 1/8 to 3/4 in without a comb | Detachable: Andis' #7FC leaves about 1/8 in and its 3/4HT about 3/4 in[1] |
| Clip short, or always use guard combs | 5-in-1: one blade and one comb set, set to #10, #15 or #30 under Wahl's combs[3] |
| Try a ceramic cutter | Detachable: Andis says one can be added to any UltraEdge blade[1] |
| Change length mid-groom without swapping blades | 5-in-1: the ProClip clicks between its five blade stops[2] |
If you are not sure which lengths you need, start with dog clipper blade sizes explained, which turns blade numbers into inches and millimeters.
On AliExpress, check which system you are buying
Some clippers sold on AliExpress use neither system: they take a head made for that model line. One listing, for example, sells a 3/6/9/12 mm "steel ceramic" head marketed for BaoRun's P2, P3, P6, P7, P9 and S1 clippers; that fit is the seller's claim.[8] The cordless clipper in our vacuum-kit shortlist is a generic model whose listing does not state its blade sizes.
Before you buy any clipper, check:
- Which blades or heads it takes, in the clipper maker's own words, not a reseller's "universal fit."
- Whether replacement blades or heads are sold separately.
- Which guard combs come with it, and their lengths in inches or millimeters.
- The voltage, on corded models. The rating label should match your outlets: standard US wall outlets are 120 V, and Andis specifies its US AGC2 as 120 V / 60 Hz.[9][6]

Questions
What does A5 mean on a dog clipper blade?
It is Oster's name for its detachable blade family: Oster says its Turbo A5 takes all Oster A5 detachable blades. Other makers refer to it, as Andis does when it says its AGC2 works with Oster A-5 blades.[5][6]
Can I put A5 blades on a 5-in-1 clipper?
Not unless the clipper maker says so. The 5-in-1 models we cite, the Andis ProClip 5-in-1 and Wahl Motiva2, are built around an adjustable 5-in-1 blade, and Wahl sells a separate guard-comb set for its 5-in-1 clippers.[2][7][3]
Do A5 blades from one brand fit another brand's clipper?
Sometimes, when the clipper maker says so: Andis states that its AGC2 works with Oster A-5 blades. We could not verify broader claims, such as every A5-style blade fitting Wahl's KM clippers.[6]
Do guard combs work on both blade systems?
Yes, but not the same combs. Wahl sells set 3390-100 for its detachable-blade clippers and set 3379 for its 5-in-1 clippers, and both go on a #10, #15 or #30 blade or setting.[3]
Which blade system is easier for grooming at home?
A 5-in-1 means one blade and one comb set. A detachable clipper means buying a blade for each length, but it reaches longer comb-free lengths, up to about 3/4 in on Andis' chart, so choose by the lengths your dog's coat needs.[1]
