AliExpress pet grooming buyer's checklist

A pre-checkout checklist for grooming tools on AliExpress: the exact variant, 110-120 V and plug, safety marks, batteries, seller claims, returns and duties.

Short answer

Before you pay: confirm the exact model and the variant you selected, choose 110-120 V with a US plug, look for a safety mark you can verify, check the battery and charger, read every spec as the seller's claim, screenshot the listing, and check the return terms and likely duties. AliExpress says it is not responsible for the quality or safety of listed products, so these checks fall to you.

1. Pin down the exact model and variant

One listing can sell several different things under one title: the full kit, a version with fewer heads, spare filters or combs. Our own catalog shows the pattern: the paw trimmer we list is sold alongside a spare-cutter-head variant on the same page. Check that the variant you select is the tool itself and that its name matches the model you researched.

Maker model codes help. Oneisall, for example, publishes manuals by model code, such as BM3 / PG04 and Cozy SE2 / PG08, which you can match against a listing's title and photos.[1]

Then compare the listing with the maker's own page, because they do not always agree. An oneisall-branded AliExpress kit claims 15000 Pa with a 1.5 L container, while oneisall.com lists its 15,000 Pa Cozy SE2 with a 2 L bin.[2][3] When the two differ, ask the seller before you order.

2. Choose 110-120 V and a US plug

Standard US wall outlets are 120 volts.[4] Canadian outlets are 120 V too: Manitoba Hydro's wiring guide, for example, lists 120 volts for lights and convenience outlets.[5] Grooming vacuums and dryers can come in separate 110 V and 220 V versions. One AliExpress listing labels its 110 V American-plug variant as suitable only for the United States, Canada, Mexico and Colombia,[6] and MetroVac sells a 220 V dryer, stated as not for use in the US, alongside its 120 V models.[7]

  • Select a variant that states 110 V or 110-120 V and a US plug. A US plug on its own does not prove the voltage.
  • When the tool arrives, read the rating label before you plug it in.
  • Do not rely on a plug adapter: it changes the plug shape, not the voltage.

3. Look for a safety mark you can verify

In Canada, Health Canada says not to buy electrical products that plug into an outlet without a Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL, that the mark must be on the product and not just the packaging, and that uncertified or counterfeit products can cause shock, burns and fire.[8] In the US, CPSC's home checklist points to marks from testing laboratories such as UL, ETL or CSA.[9]

A mark in a listing photo is a start, not proof. Intertek says its ETL Listed Mark can be checked in its Directory of Listed Products, and UL offers its Product iQ database for verifying UL certification.[10][11] Ask the seller for the certificate or file number, then look it up.

Do not mistake an FCC logo for a safety mark. FCC authorization covers radio-frequency devices and harmful interference, not shock or fire safety.[12]

4. Check the battery and charger

For cordless clippers, trimmers, grinders and vacuums:

  • Make sure a charger is included. Health Canada advises using the charger that came with the device, and only chargers with a recognized Canadian mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL.[13]
  • Ask for the battery's UN 38.3 test summary. PHMSA says lithium battery manufacturers must make one available on request.[14]
  • When it arrives, do not use a swollen or dented battery, and charge it at room temperature where you can see it, as Health Canada advises.[13]

5. Read every claim as the seller's

AliExpress's terms say it does not control, and is not responsible for, the quality, safety, lawfulness or availability of the products listed.[15] So:

  • Noise and suction are claims. None of the grooming-vacuum makers whose pages we checked publishes a standardized test method,[16] and AIRROBO footnotes its 50 dB claim as internal laboratory testing of the device only.[17] See what grooming-vacuum noise claims mean.
  • "Compatible with" a blade, filter or clipper is the seller's claim until the maker of your tool confirms it.
  • "Official Store" is an AliExpress label, and store names change. A store that search engines index as "ONEISALL Official Store" now redirects to a different seller, "Bincoo Authorized Store".[18]
  • Health and safety promises, such as "safe for all pets", are marketing. No tool suits every coat or every pet.

6. Screenshot the listing

Before you pay, save screenshots of the selected variant, the voltage and plug, the specs, the seller's name, the return badge and the delivery estimate. If what arrives differs from what was listed, the screenshots are your record.

7. Check returns and duties

AliExpress's Free Return terms let buyers return participating items without giving a reason within 15 calendar days of confirmed receipt, if unused, undamaged and in original packaging with seals and labels intact. The prepaid return service can be used at most three times a month, and several categories are excluded.[19] A 2024 US announcement described a 90-day window for eligible items,[20] so read the terms on your own listing rather than relying on either figure.

Duties apply in both countries:

  • United States: CBP has indefinitely suspended duty-free de minimis treatment, so shipments valued at $2,500 or less are subject to applicable duties, apart from narrow exceptions such as genuine gifts of $100 or less. This covers international mail too.[21]
  • Canada: postal shipments from any country, and courier shipments from outside the US and Mexico, are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20.[22]

Before you pay

  • The selected variant is the tool, not a part, and matches the model you researched.
  • It states 110 V or 110-120 V and a US plug.
  • You know which safety mark it should carry, and how to look it up.
  • For cordless tools: a charger is included and the seller can supply battery details.
  • You have screenshots of the variant, specs and return terms.
  • You know whether Free Return applies and how long you have.
  • You have allowed for duties or taxes.

For the bigger picture, see buying and safety, and buy only what your dog's coat needs with the at-home grooming kit checklist.

Questions

Is a US plug enough to know a grooming tool will work in the US?

No. The plug shape and the voltage rating are separate. Pick a variant that states 110 V or 110-120 V and check the rating label on the unit; standard US outlets are 120 V.[4][6]

Can I trust a safety mark shown in the listing photos?

Not on its own. Health Canada says the certification mark must be on the product itself, not just the packaging. Intertek and UL both offer online databases for checking a certification, so ask the seller for the file number.[8][10][11]

What should I ask the seller before ordering a cordless tool?

Confirm that a charger is included, and ask for the battery details and its UN 38.3 test summary, which PHMSA says lithium battery manufacturers must make available on request. Health Canada advises using the charger that came with the device.[14][13]

How long do I have to return an item bought on AliExpress?

For items in the Free Return program, the terms give 15 calendar days from confirmed receipt, for items that are unused and in original packaging. Not every item takes part, and a 2024 US announcement described a different window, so check the badge and terms on your listing.[19][20]

Will I have to pay US import duties on an AliExpress order?

Duties now apply to US shipments valued at $2,500 or less, because CBP has suspended duty-free de minimis treatment. CBP's pages do not say how AliExpress collects them, so check whether duties appear at checkout before you pay.[21]
