Grooming vacuum or clipper: which suits you?

Whether a grooming vacuum kit or a plain clipper suits you depends on where you groom, your dog's coat and how you feel about noise and storage.

The short answer

Choose a vacuum kit if you groom indoors and want hair collected as you go. Choose a clipper if you groom outdoors, want something light and quiet to store, or already own a vacuum you are happy with.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Where will you groom? Indoors favours a vacuum kit; a garden or garage makes a clipper enough.
  2. How much does your dog shed? Heavy shedders fill canisters quickly, so canister size matters.
  3. How does your dog handle noise? Any vacuum adds noise to the clipper. Introduce it gradually.
  4. Where will you store it? Vacuum kits are bulky; a clipper fits in a drawer.
  5. Can you get parts? Check that guide combs and blades are sold separately.
